I’m Joy in name and in spirit.

I have found myself, somewhere near the middle of my life, realizing that I’m uniquely qualified to write a book series about outdoor sports. I have spent my life snowboarding, surfing, sailing, climbing, backpacking and mountain biking and I’m ready to share my experiences, page by page.

I wanted to write these books because they are what I want to read. They are also what I want to watch and find myself seeking out on YouTube, Peacock, and film festivals. While I have found plenty to keep me entertained as an adult, there are not nearly enough in the adventure section of the library or streaming queue for kids. These books celebrate the next generation of amateur athletes, stewards, and trail workers. If we don’t teach them etiquette, remind them to clean up the beach on their way back to the car, and give them real life experiences before they head out on their own, they will not only look a fool, but will be under-equipped to deal with common situations.

I want these books to be The Babysitters Club for the little shredders on the ski slopes, passing their parents up at 7 years of age. I want them also to be the Falcom Guides for how to approach a line up, how much equipment is too much equipment, and what to do when a set comes. I want kids to know the names of bike parts, climbing gear, and what gear is the easiest to get started with. I want them to how equipment should be cleaned, and whether you should use oil or water to do it. I want to pour out all the things I’ve accumulated in my head since I was little, because playing outside is what I’ve paid the most attention to and writing about it is what I want my next journey to be.
